Illuminating the world of the inner ear: Advances in visualizing the labyrinth inside our head

Dr. Christopher Smith is a Postdoctoral Fellow in the Division of Anthropology at the American Museum of Natural History in New York City. His research broadly covers the evolution of human cranial morphology and neurosensory systems with a focus on the inner ear labyrinth. Dr. Smith also has a passion for scientific communication and is a board-certified medical illustrator. In this talk, Dr. Smith will review the challenges in studying the inner ear and present his work on visualizing the membranous labyrinth. The talk will conclude with a discussion on the implications for understanding sensory ecology and the evolution of mammalian hearing and balance.
