Student/Postdoc Director Roles & Responsibilities
The Student/Postdoc Director serves a three-year term with no option to serve a consecutive term in the same capacity.
Directors:
- Provide governance and establish policy.
- Assume legal and fiduciary responsibility for the association.
- Assure that activities of the association are consistent with the mission, vision, values and strategic plan.
- Measure accomplishments against strategic goals.
- May act as advisors to committees, as assigned.
- Act as liaisons to other organizations, as assigned.
- Represent AAA at official functions.
- Actively identify, develop, and recruit new organizational leaders.
- Must disclose conflict of interests by completing and maintaining an annual conflict of interest disclosure statement.
- Annually evaluate the executive director and participate in the Board self-assessment.
Qualifications & Commitments
- Those seeking election to the Board should have prior leadership experience. Leadership attributes such as strategic thinking, critical thinking, active listening, facilitation skills, and the ability to develop consensus are essential to the success of any governing body.
- The ideal Board member appreciates his/her role as a steward for the anatomical or related sciences.
- While adequate preparation by staff and leaders is essential to the success of the governance process, Directors are expected to engage in self-directed study, as needed, in order to fully understand issues and assignments.
- Strong communications skills are essential. Since the Board of Directors oversees a public non-profit corporation a foundation in management and basic understanding of finance are helpful skill sets.
Time Commitment
- Directors typically spend one hour per week on AAA communications and business.
- Directors must attend Board meetings (three each year – one in the fall, one in the summer, and one in the spring immediately preceding the Annual Meeting) and participate in conference calls and the Annual Meeting.
