AAA Board Member Expectations

Members of the American Association for Anatomy Board of Directors must be fully committed and dedicated to the association's vision, mission, and values.

TERM

Non-Officer Directors shall serve a three-year term.

2023/24 Meeting Dates

  • December 1-2, 2023 – Board Meeting, Rockville, MD, in-person only
  • March 21-22, 2024 – Board Meeting, Toronto, ON, CA, in-person only
  • March 22-25, 2024 – Anatomy Connected, Annual Meeting, Toronto, ON, CA 
  • June TBD, 2024 – Half-day Board Strategy Meeting, virtual 
  • Fall Board Meeting at AAA Headquarters in Rockville, MD, in-person only

EXPECTATIONS

  • Board members are expected to attend the AAA Annual Meeting, Anatomy Connected.
  • Board members are expected to attend and be fully prepared for at least two out of three annual Board meetings and, in years that apply, strategic planning sessions.  Dates of the meetings are planned well in advance for scheduling and travel purposes.  
    Travel Expenses - As a Board member, AAA will reimburse you for the cost of your travel expenses to the Board meeting within our reimbursement policy. (link to the policy)  The fall Board meeting includes airfare/transportation and up to 2 nights hotel.  The spring Board meeting, held at the annual meeting, includes airfare/transportation and up to 2 nights hotel only.  Registration and accommodation for the duration of the annual meeting are to be covered by the Board member. Estimated expense is $1,200 USD.
  • Board members are expected to be responsive to AAA business.  Communications among the AAA Board and Staff continue throughout the year.  Timely replies are expected for all calls for Board input or vote.
  • Each Board member is expected to personally recruit at least one new member for AAA each fiscal year (January 1 – December 31).
  • Building the Board is a continual process. Directors are expected to help AAA find new directors who support the Association’s mission, who will work well with other members of the Board, and who will contribute time and talent generously. New directors are nominated by the Nominating Committee but helping to build the Board is everyone’s responsibility.
  • Each member’s dues must be paid, and their membership be in good standing to be eligible to serve on the Board of Directors.
  • If a Board member is unable to meet these obligations, it is expected that they will resign their position.
