The evolution and development of cartilage and bone
Bone and cartilage are specialized types of connective tissue and biomineralization has facilitated the formation of these diverse mineralized tissues in vertebrates. But how do transcription factors direct undifferentiated cells to turn into bone or cartilage cells? Through transcriptomics, molecular genetics, and advanced imaging techniques, Dr. Brian Eames seeks to understand how skeletal tissues develop and evolve, ultimately applying this knowledge to better understand diseases such as osteoarthritis. Bone is a vertebrate novelty, but the fossil record and comparative embryology reveal homology of mineralized skeletal tissues (and their cell types) between chondrichthyans and other vertebrates, challenging the notion of chondrichthyans as “cartilaginous fishes”. This webinar is free and open access for both members and nonmembers.
