Pelvic Evolution and Bipedalism: How Humans Came to Walk

Humans walk on two legs. The shift from walking on all fours like our ancestors to upright bipedalism coincided with remodeling of the pelvis. But how this transformation occurred is poorly understood. Using a variety of tools spanning developmental biology, genetics, genomics, comparative biology, and primate/human evolution, Dr. Terence Capellini seeks to understand how human and non-human primate biological adaptations occur. His research has shown that changes in directional growth and the persistence of a cartilage template have facilitated modulation of the unique shape of the human pelvis. Identifying the genetic mechanisms that drive such biological trait formation and inheritance can also help inform musculoskeletal disease risk.

This webinar is free and open access for both members and nonmembers.
