Member Spotlight: Dr. Rebecca Pratt - Bridging the Gap with Fascia

Anatomy Now - October 25, 2023

To many anatomists, fascia is that thing you remove to reveal deeper anatomical knowledge. But Dr. Rebecca Pratt has learned to appreciate this underappreciated system. Her journey through the brave space of science communication began at the AAA Scicomm Bootcamp in 2019, where she found her group of like-minded individuals and harnessed her enthusiasm for fascia, ultimately finding the confidence to advocate for her work. Dr. Pratt's work has not only evolved her own career but also led to fascinating revelations in the world of anatomy.

Dr. Pratt's early career was dedicated to teaching gross anatomy to medical students. For over 20 years, she followed the traditional path of lecturing, conducting lab sessions, and occasionally delving into embryology and histology. Her passion for anatomy, however, led her to a significant pivot in her career.

A Shift Towards Fascia

Today, Dr. Pratt is fervently pursuing the study of the fascial system, something often overlooked in anatomy that plays a crucial role in the human body. Her transformation began during her attendance at the AAA Scicomm Bootcamp in 2019, where she realized the power of effective science communication in a supportive environment. The Bootcamp served as a turning point, allowing her to articulate her love for fascia to her peers.

Fascia, often considered one of the least glamorous aspects of anatomy, became the centerpiece of Dr. Pratt's research interests. She describes it humorously as the tissue that often gets discarded to reveal the more exciting muscles underneath. Despite the challenges of gaining recognition in a field that traditionally focuses on more mainstream anatomical structures, Dr. Pratt persevered.

Networking and Collaboration

Her time at the Bootcamp also introduced her to colleague Lauri Nemetz, a fellow enthusiast of fascia. This chance meeting laid the foundation for a successful partnership. Dr. Pratt's fascination with fascia and her growing expertise in the field led to collaborations that extended across continents. From guest lectures at the University of Pretoria Medical School, the University of Cape Town, and Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University in South Africa; to convincing the Body Worlds exhibition in Germany to highlight this tissue, leading to the incredible FR:EIA (Fascia Revealed: Educating Interconnected Anatomy) Exhibition, Dr. Pratt's work on fascia has made a global impact.

The Brave Space of Science Communication

Science communication became a powerful tool for Dr. Pratt to share her passion for fascia with the world. She embraced the idea that she had to let go of the 80% who might not share her enthusiasm and focus on the 20% who were ready to learn and embrace the science. Dr. Pratt, like other successful science communicators, recognized the importance of presenting her work with excitement and conviction, maybe even inspiring curiosity and provoking deeper thought in her audience.

Finding Her People

Science is collaborative, but finding those people that share your particular passion can still be elusive. Participating in events like the AAA Scicomm Bootcamp allowed Dr. Pratt to find her group of like-minded individuals who appreciated her work. These experiences left her rejuvenated and enthusiastic, reinforcing the value of creating supportive environments for scientists to thrive.

The Future of Fascia

Dr. Pratt's work with the fascial system is not slowing down. She highlights the recent surge of interest in this field, with articles in Men's Health and Women's Health magazines and collaborations with international experts. Fascia, once overlooked, is now gaining recognition as a vital aspect of human anatomy. Dr. Pratt has even embarked on the ambitious journey of changing the anatomical nomenclature to reflect the importance of the fascial system.

An Integrative Medicine Congress

In an exciting development, Dr. Pratt is working on organizing an Integrative Medicine Congress in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in May 2024. This event will focus on women's health and the role of fascia in integrative medicine. Dr. Pratt will serve as the MC, bridging the language barrier with a translator, “I’m the MC, which will be fun because I don’t speak Portuguese…So again, it goes back to Scicomm Bootcamp.  I just have to show my excitement.”

Dr. Rebecca Pratt's journey through the brave space of science communication and her dedication to fascia research is an inspiring tale of perseverance and the power of a supportive scientific community. Her work is not only changing the landscape of anatomical research but also enhancing the understanding of the vital role fascia plays in the human body. Stay tuned for more exciting developments in the world of fascia and anatomy.

Make sure you are keeping up with Dr. Pratt’s work at the Fascia Research Society.
