We're All Ears! Coffee and Conversation with President Martine Dunnwald and President-Elect Anne Burrows

To kick off the day’s events, members had the opportunity to speak to AAA president Martine Dunnwald and president-elect Anne Burrows. This was a great opportunity to give feedback directly to the leadership. Here are a few of the themes that came up.

  • How can members make sure the things they love about AAA remain?
    • If you love something, make sure you let us know! Feedback will help shape the organization as we move forward. Also, don’t be afraid to get involved and stay involved in the committees and interest groups that are available to members.
  • We love webinars!
    • Several members expressed interest in having more access to content. If you have suggestions on topics you would like to see, contact the groups that are producing content. Also, make sure you keep your eye on your inbox. The Anatomy Connected newsletter is your year-round source for all the things that are happening in the association after the meeting.
  • New Relationships
    • Anatomy Connected is often a time when you meet new members of the community. It’s often stated that AAA members are welcoming to new faces and voices, a sentiment that was echoed this morning. Martine Dunnwald emphasized the importance of this community as a place to dissolve silos and create lasting relationships across disciplines, making special note of our new friends, the Association of Medical Illustrators.

The AAA leadership, including President Martine Dunnwald and President-Elect Anne Burrows, extends gratitude to all participants for their invaluable feedback and enthusiasm. Let's continue to engage, connect, and shape our association together.

The VH Dissector: Clinically Relevant Sectional Anatomy

Understanding sectional anatomy is important for students, especially those who will eventually find themselves in a clinical setting. However, it's tough to find the right way to make the leap from the key reference images, often presented in full-color and a coronal view, to the greyscale slices in clinical images. The VH Dissector offers a dynamic tool to help bridge the gap. This tool can help build a better understanding of spatial relationships, develop an understanding of imaging techniques, and prepare students to enter the clinic with confidence.

Invisible Bodies: The Sex and Gender Diversity that Textbooks Don't Show

For too long, medical education has been stuck in a binary sex paradigm. However, new voices are asking new questions, and new research is giving new insight into the diversity of the human body. As session co-chair Dr. Ann Zumwalt stated, “We’re being pushed to do better. The great news is, we can”. What unfolded was a serious look at the problem of representation, the ripple effect it has on healthcare, and a potential way forward.

  • Beyond the Binary
    • Dr. Kelsey Lewis set up the current state of representation and pushed back against the binary sex paradigm, showing evidence that mosaic genital appearance is part of the developmental pathway, not a deviation.
  • Undoing Erasure
    • Dr. Ayden Scheim showed the adverse effect of structural erasure of trans and non-binary bodies on health outcomes, advocating for early and consistent integration of this community in medical education.
  • More Than a Picture
    • Dr. Theo Smith showed a path forward for anatomy education. The POP-AART project, which should be available to AAA members later this year, offers a valuable resource for including diverse bodies into our curriculum.

Invisible Bodies is a powerful call to action for the medical education community to embrace diversity and challenge the binary constraints of anatomy education. This enlightening session underscores the importance of representation, promising a more inclusive and accurate understanding of the human body for future generations.
