Maximize your experience at our most important meeting of the year!

Every year, AAA grants Travel Awards to help members pay their way to the Annual Meeting, with awards of $250 and $350 available for new and renewing student/post-doctorate members who submit an abstract and present. Recipients are also eligible for the onsite Student and Postdoc Competition Awards, with prizes as high as $500 per award.

The deadline for 2020 has expired, but it’s not too late to celebrate the best of the industry at our Closing Awards Ceremony! [Coming Soon] Purchase tickets now to celebrate the best in anatomical science.

What does it take to submit a winning entry?

Applying for a Travel & Competition Award isn’t difficult, but it does require some preparation. Here’s how to get started:

  1. Are you a member? If not, join now!
  2. Review the presentation guidelines, judging criteria, and frequently asked questions for an insider’s view into how judges determine finalists.
  3. Find a mentor or study buddy on the list of past winners. [Coming Soon]
  4. Prepare your abstract early and remember to apply for an award at the same time. Get details on experimentalbiology.org.
  5. Questions? Call 301-634-7907 or email us.
  • You must:
    • Be an AAA member with dues paid or renewed by the date of the abstract deadline.
    • Be the first author on the abstract and attend EB to present your research.
  • How it works
    • List AAA/Anatomy as your sponsoring society when submitting the abstract.
    • Select an AAA abstract topic category when submitting your abstract.
    • The award application is part of the abstract submission process. Candidates may apply while submitting an abstract at experimentalbiology.org.
  • Member type/career level
    • Only students and postdocs are eligible for travel and competition awards.
    • Early career and junior faculty may apply for an Early-Career Travel Award.
  • Award amount
    • The $250 Travel Award is for new members.
    • The $350 Travel Award is for members with more than one consecutive year of membership, without a lapse in membership.
  • Only one travel award application per person. If you are submitting multiple abstracts, select your best abstract to be submitted for a travel award and presentation competition.
  • Oral and poster presentations that are research focused (i.e., non-descriptive works) will be prioritized over descriptive works and given more consideration when selecting award finalists. While the submission of descriptive works is encouraged, please recognize that the evaluation of scientific and educational research presentations relies heavily on the tenets of the scientific process as a guide to compare and judge the quality of presentations.
  • Travel Awards are distributed at the meeting after your poster or oral presentation.
  • Applicants have the opportunity to compete for a platform or poster award within their academic level, in addition to receiving a Travel Award. Abstracts are pre-judged to determine finalists in each category.
  • All Travel Award recipients will receive one complimentary ticket to attend the Closing Awards Ceremony, where Competition Awards are presented. Additional tickets may be purchased online prior to the meeting. Only finalists are required to attend the ceremony.
  • Only applications with confirmed abstracts will be considered. No substitution of first author/presenter allowed. Cancellations or no-shows will not receive a travel award.
  • Recipients and finalists are notified about eight weeks after the abstract deadline.
  • Judges may withhold specific awards at their discretion.
